The Liverpool kit has even angered its own fans. Tut tut.
Each kit (shirt and shorts) is made using up to thirteen recycled plastic water bottles.
That picture is just so bloody Oldham. The Town of Chimneys.slowcoach wrote:
United are promoting their ‘Made in Manchester’ kit by using a historic photograph of Oldham.
Nike, the manufacturers of the new patterned top, claim it was inspired by the cotton industry that dominated the city when the team was formed in 1878.
It was launched on United’s Facebook page – which has more than 24.5m ‘likes’ – along with a picture of a skyline dominated by Victorian mills and chimneys.
The snap, which features the United badge and the ‘Made of Manchester slogan, is captioned: “Cotton mills packed the skyline back in Manchester’s industrial heyday. Life was defined by hard graft and long days at work.”
But experts have confirmed the picture is of Oldham.
A spokesman for the Oldham Local Studies and Archives team said: “The photo is of the Coldhurst area of Oldham, just north-west of the town centre.
“The nearest mill shown is the Coldhurst Hall Mill.
“The photo is taken from approximately Sunfield Road, looking over the pens and allotments in the foreground.
“The nearest terrace of houses are situated on Trinity Street, named after the church whose bell tower can be seen on the left – Holy Trinity, Coldhurst.”
A spokesman for Nike, who recently penned a six-year, multi-million pound deal to make City’s kits from next season, said a historian supplied the image.
He said: “We mistakenly included a photograph featuring mills in Oldham rather than Manchester on a Facebook post to promote the new Manchester United home kit.
“The image will not be used in any other part of the campaign.”
The new kit carries the slogan 'forged in industry, Made of Manchester’ and is a red Gingham design with black trim.
Inside the collar are the words ‘Forged in Industry, Striving for Glory’.
The kit has attracted a mixed reaction from Reds fans on Facebook.
A United spokesman confirmed the shirt would be worn by the first team next season.
He said: “It’s historical, unusual and a bit different. Gingham was invented in Manchester when it was known for its cotton mills.”
