Re: Cup Round 1
The Newsfront Cup was aimed at teams eliminated early in the Challenge Cup....meant players often had at least one extra game a year...isn't that what we want to do as players ?
I have had the fortune of holding aloft the Newsfront "diddy" Cup, the same season Elizabeth Downs were promoted from Division 2 in 1992. It meant another 5 games that season, all challenging and rewarding, I don't see it relating to PC at all.
We all can't achieve Division 1 "Premier" titles, Challenge Cups etc...if not a Cup of this nature maybe they should have Divisional Cup competitions as the do in England...ie Johnson Paint Cup..
It also gave other clubs a chance at some of the prize money that the SAASL had on offer and another opportunity to play.
Also, Elizabeth Grove won the Challenge Cup when they were in Division 3 (pretty much with a team that went on to reach Division 1 ).

Swanny, well done on winning the Newsfront Cup aka 'The Diddy Cup'
Whilst I'm certain it was a legitimate win on behalf of your club, I'm equally aware that a number of clubs purposefully lost the first round of the cup in order to hopefully win the 'Newsfront Cup'
Personally it's not a cup I would want to win but I understand having won it, you think differently
Also I still believe working on a more 'real' punishment for forfeits, rather than having a consolation cup is a better idea
As you mentioned in your report Southern Breakers were very undermanned and had little chance of winning but turned up and made a 'game' of it - that's what it should be about

Re: Cup Round 1
What about when you nominate to go into the cup you have to pay a $500 bond per team ($1000 for reserves and First team). Should you get knocked out you get that refunded back.
If you forfiet then you must front to the SAASL big wigs to plead your case to get the refund should they deam that the excuse is of the correct nature- and not to just not get spanked!
When it gets to the quarters- all remaining teams get their money refunded as it is at the pointy end of the season and the money needs to be used for preo nights ect.

Re: Cup Round 1
Never intended it to be for teams that forfeit...up until now I hadn't heard of any Clubs deliberately losing to play in the Newsfront Cup (unless Adelaide Celtic did this ?), I was never suggesting the second tier Cup as an option for them....if they didn't compete and get knocked out, why should they get another option ?Knight15 wrote:Swanny, well done on winning the Newsfront Cup aka 'The Diddy Cup'

I am more aware of teams bolstering their Reserve side in the Cup.
Secondly, another Cup competition might alleviate the issue of teams having a stronger Reserve side in the Cup because of being knocked out in Round 1....players playing in the Newsfront Cup would remain Cup tied to the As if they competed.
Why do SAASL give big clubs that have won the biggest prize money (Sat-Sun Premiers) the chance of winning more money for a one-game competition.

no one would 'prefer' to win a '2nd tier' cup but if i was a proffessional and was given the option of trying to win the europa cup or nothing at all Id be in for that no worries! sure id prefer to be in the champions league.... same deal here... Id prefer to win the challenge cup, but if we werent good enough Id love a crack at something else! why not have this cup avaliable! like has been said... we all want to play as many games as possible and we all want to win something!

Re: Cup Round 1
a consolation cup is reward for losing and would most likely be won by an early exit div1 or div2 side anyway
i would rather the saasl give the div4 and lower teams something they can actually win without it being demeaned as a losers cup

Re: Cup Round 1
I think we can argue about this as much as we want nothing will change unless someone actually takes these iseas to the league, and even then i doubt anything will actually happen.
I personally dont see what all the fuss is about. If clubs want to forfeit then let them, it just means that some teams get lucky and get to go straight through to the next round.
If these teams are that upset about missing a game then organise a friendly with one of the other teams without a game.

Re: Cup Round 1
Why is it a losers cup ?...back in 1992, after losing in Round 1 to eventual Challenge Cup Winners Salisbury Inter, we had to win six other games to win the Newsfront Cup.vertu1 wrote:a consolation cup is reward for losing and would most likely be won by an early exit div1 or div2 side anyway

(A) Adelaide Casino Aces ( Sunday Div 8 ) 1-7
(A) MA Hawks ( Saturday Div 2 ) 0-2
(H) Newton MSSC ( Sunday Div 2 ) 3-1
(A) Adelaide University ( Saturday Div 2 ) 0-2
(N) WS Torrecuso ( Saturday Div 2 ) 1-0
(N) Tea Tree Gully ( Sunday Div 2 ) 3-1
It was great exposure for us to teams from the Saturday divisions...added to that we played in a 12 team Sunday Division 2....so all up 29 official games
Other winners NAB Demons, Parafield Gardens, Elizabeth Field, Elizabeth Field, Smithfield East, Plympton and Hahndorf would also have had to win a string of games.

Re: Cup Round 1
Swannsong, what div where the winners of this comp from? Where they all from div 2? No point creating a cup where a lower div side isn't going to have a chance anyway. I would agree with a comp for C teams and clubs with 1 team etc before a cup like this.swannsong wrote:Why is it a losers cup ?...back in 1992, after losing in Round 1 to eventual Challenge Cup Winners Salisbury Inter, we had to win six other games to win the Newsfront Cup.vertu1 wrote:a consolation cup is reward for losing and would most likely be won by an early exit div1 or div2 side anyway

Doesn't look to me like they were overly convincing results either... further emphasising the hard work the team put in to win it perhaps?swannsong wrote:Why is it a losers cup ?...back in 1992, after losing in Round 1 to eventual Challenge Cup Winners Salisbury Inter, we had to win six other games to win the Newsfront Cup.vertu1 wrote:a consolation cup is reward for losing and would most likely be won by an early exit div1 or div2 side anyway

I would be proud of it.
Those that demean it as a losers cup would be the jealous types i think.

True, however many people aren't fans of the 3rd placed team in the Champions League getting into the Europa League it would be an interesting exercise to see how many people would want the consolation cup backandyb wrote:Knight15 wrote:Swanny, well done on winning the Newsfront Cup aka 'The Diddy Cup'

I agree, comparing people who are paid a lot of money to play football to those of us who have to pay to do so is completely fair.Knight15 wrote:True, however many people aren't fans of the 3rd placed team in the Champions League getting into the Europa League it would be an interesting exercise to see how many people would want the consolation cup backandyb wrote:Knight15 wrote:Swanny, well done on winning the Newsfront Cup aka 'The Diddy Cup'

Re: Cup Round 1
its a cup, play your game and you never know, there is always a fairytale story every year, look at angle vale, almost knocked of iggies, not a fan of all these forfeits
Re: Cup Round 1
Alot of our recent arrivals from England and Scotland are surprised with the lack of football we play. Back home they could play in two or there cups.

Very true!17N wrote:Alot of our recent arrivals from England and Scotland are surprised with the lack of football we play. Back home they could play in two or there cups.
From memory:
Senior Cup
Presidents Cup
County Cup
Charity Cup
The last 2 were optional but other teams could also be playing senior & intermediate OR intermediate junior depending on their division.
I also used to play for a team in the saturday league and the sunday league. All up I'd play approximately 40-50 games a season.
Re: Cup Round 1
In 1989 Dinamo SA, then in Division 8 (no Reserve side) won the Consolation Cup....
I remember they beat us (Elizabeth Downs - relegated to Division 3 that season ) 4-3 in the Semi Finals... Ivan Zafran starred for them.

Do red cards in the cup get served in the league or during the next round of the cup?
