If it's so bad why is it that the horses keep running even after they have unseated their riders?

816 deaths of horses on the track (and thats just in England!)in the past 1862 days.
If that were jockeys, the so-called sport would be banned by now.

but it's not jockeys is it. and they salivate because they know what's coming. So if you're saying the point with this race then they run because they enjoy doing so.
Therefore horses enjoy running in packs and therefore there's nothing wrong with the sport.
Re: Grand National
We've been through this many times before Hawkesy, and, as usual you go round and round in tiring circles.
A racehorse runs and jumps in a race, because from a young age, it is what it is trained to do.
I have yet to see a horse in a paddock gleefully running in packs, as you say, and happily jumping fences.
Otherwise, it would be pointless fencing them in, wouldn't it, as gets be gleefully racing their mates and leaping over their fences for fun...possibly also getting their horsey friend to tie a heavy weight on their back while gleefully doing it....

...in which case all equestrian events should be banned also?

Re: Grand National
Several people miss the point with jumps racing. It showcases the athleticism of the horse, combining both the skill of showjumping, and the speed of racing. I don't understand why people believe it is cruelty, when falls are purely accidental, and 95% of the time do not result in deaths. People that own the horses don't tend to be international syndicates, they are individuals who love their animals, as do the jockeys of these horses. Being a jumps jockey is not a glamourous, well paying job, nor would one do it unless they truly loved it. See Adrian Lechmere as a case in point. Banning the sport will achieve little in terms of animal rights, compared to say banning the circus. Protesters do not like the sport of horse racing, and use jumps fatalities as an emotive tool to further their agenda. The solution is simple, if you don't like it, don't watch it. But don't ruin it for the owners, trainers, jockeys, or the 100,000 plus spectators at Oakbank, Warrnambool, or Aintree, who enjoy watching these great animals at the peak of their powers.redmum wrote:We've been through this many times before Hawkesy, and, as usual you go round and round in tiring circles.

Re: Grand National
laughed and thought of GIAE when i read this...
Advertiser wrote: During an interview for English racing channel At The Races, Moody was taken aback when questioned about the merit of Black Caviar's form.
It was suggested that the super sprinter needs to win the Group 1 Diamond Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot next month to "prove herself".
Moody was then asked "how much of a massive blow" would it be for him if Black Caviar's unbeaten winning streak ended in England and the trainer, never one to take a backward step, went straight onto the front foot.
"You have never seen anything like this horse before," Moody said.
"It would be an absolute tragedy if she went there and got beaten by your B-grade sprinters, for half the prizemoney and (travelling) three-quarters of the way around the world ... It is something I will take all endeavours to make sure won't happen."
Moody even suggested if he wasn't certain that Black Caviar was at her absolute best for the Diamond Jubilee Stakes, he would not risk her unbeaten record.
"She won't run for the sake of it," he said.
"If I take her all the way over there and she is not right I won't run her for the sake of running."
Black Caviar is a victim of her own greatness to a certain extent as her mere presence among race entries tends to scare off her opposition.
She is so good, rival trainers and owners often decide run their sprinters in other races rather than run for second behind the great mare.
But Black Caviar's unbeaten 20-race winning streak, lofty Timeform ratings (136) and international rankings list her as the world's best sprinter.

Re: Grand National
At last a balanced article in australia about the horse. Admitting they pick and choose races and that she hasn't really beaten any decent horses yet.
This horse might be the greatest ever but we'll never know until it races against something decent.

Diamond jubilee stakes this weekend.
An Aussie horse has won 5 of the last 9 years of this race.
Black caviar won't even work up a sweat winning this one.

I'll bet you a beer that aussie horses have not won the Diamond Jubillee Stakes race 5 times, let alone 5 times in the last 9 years.Ciudad Juarez wrote:Diamond jubilee stakes this weekend.

On the rest, I agree. She's not the 2nd best horse in the world for nothing. The only downsite would be, has she raced much in the wet?
