Championship Round-up

Championship round-up

Published: 04 Feb 2012

LEADERS West Ham beat Millwall 2-1 in a fiery east London derby at Upton Park - despite seeing skipper Kevin Nolan sent off inside 10 minutes.

The Hammers captain was shown a straight red card for a challenge on Millwall defender Jack Smith.

However, Carlton Cole headed the home side into the lead on the stroke of half time and although Liam Trotter equalised in the 66th minute,

West Ham went back in front just three minutes later.

The winner was hotly disputed after Lions' goalkeeper David Forde appeared to be fouled by Julien Faubert as he tried to punch the ball clear with Winston Reid volleying the ball into the top corner from 20 yards.

Managerless Leeds looked to put their recent troubles behind them as they beat 10-man Bristol City 3-0 less than a week after the departure of Simon Grayson.

Robert Snodgrass opened the scoring five minutes before the break before City defender James Wilson was sent off with a minute remaining in the first half for a poor challenge on Ross McCormack.

McCormack then added Leeds' second in the 79th minute before Luciano Becchio scored the third in stoppage time to seal the first win for Whites caretaker manager Neil Redfearn.

Strugglers Coventry saw their hopes of moving one step closer to lifting themselves out of the relegation zone dashed when Michael Chopra's last-minute goal saw them lose 3-2 at home against Ipswich.

Jay Emmanuel-Thomas opened the scoring for the visitors in the 22nd minute before the home side hit back through Sammy Clingan's penalty seven minutes later.

Gary Deegan put the Sky Blues in front on the stroke of half-time but two second-half headers by Chopra, including one deep into stoppage time, saw Coventry fall to the foot of the table.

Matt Phillips scored twice as Blackpool came from behind to beat promotion rivals Cardiff 3-1.

Joe Mason opened the scoring for the home side at the Cardiff City Stadium before Matt Phillips' scored either side of Kevin Phillips' 83rd-minute volley to move two points behind the Welsh side in the league table.

Will Buckley's 90th-minute goal saw Brighton beat Leicester 1-0 at the Amex Stadium.

Buckley volleyed the ball into the back of Kasper Schmeichel's net from the middle of the area after he was picked out by Vicente's cross from the right byline.

Watford beat Barnsley 2-1 at Vicarage Road thanks to John Eustace's double.

Eustace scored a goal in each half with Scott Golbourne's 85th-minute score for the visiting Tykes scant consolation.

Burnley drew 1-1 with Peterborough at Turf Moor. Paul Taylor gave Peterborough the lead with a strike in the 12th minute but the home side managed to salvage a point thanks to Jay Rodriguez's goal three minutes before stoppage time.

Elsewhere, Middlesbrough drew 0-0 against Crystal Palace and the game between Doncaster and Reading and Portsmouth's match against Hull were both postponed due to frozen pitches.

Was funny though cos I knew it would piss you two off, but it was a shocking bit of reffing. Took the keeper out after the ball had gone but got away with it.

This is one of the arguments behind the plan hatched to take competitive games abroad, despite fierce opposition from fans..

I watched a filthy, cheating scumbag team get just what they wanted, saw another ref have a bottle job day, and I saw more diving than we'll get in the Olympics. I'm surprised the pitch isn't littered with broken teeth, and the local hospital x-ray machine needing a charge up for the amount of time Leeds players held faces and clutched wounded limbs. It's not stopped. It's encouraged.
Nothing's changed at leeds i see.

Sounds like we were robbed for the equaliser. Player fouled and as the loose ball is smased home the ref blows for the penalty which is then missed.

Oh well I'm sure the boys had fun
You are without doubt the biggest mongs to walk this earth. Do everyone a favour and fuck off home and hide your kids, go to Istanbul and get stabbed, or take after your hero Gary Speed and hang yourself, you utter, backward northern mongs.

did look a bit divey but hard to say from that angle, but leeds are in no way able to whinge about diving and play acting. Leeds - running away together.
