FOOTBALL CLUB V SOCCER CLUB
Why is it that so few teams in the SAASL have as part of their name the title "FOOTBALL CLUB" in lieu of that horrible title "SOCCER CLUB"? It is about time that those constituted clubs made changes to their Constitution to be now known as a "FOOTBALL CLUB", and those without a constitution just change their title on the SAASL Club Registration application.

Because we are Australian living in Australia. In this wonderful country of ours we play soccer. Just ask any member of the Qantas Socceroos.

Re: FOOTBALL CLUB V SOCCER CLUB
Maybe you'd be better off asking the SAASL to change to the SAAFL.
Why does it matter???

Re: FOOTBALL CLUB V SOCCER CLUB
In a fantasy happy world football in Australia would be known as football....but I'm sorry to say it just hasn't panned out that way here....I don't think we really needed to change all the clubs to "football club" instead of "Soccer Club" to improve the games image here....I think all it has done has created confusion. We all have to use the term soccer when someone doesn't know which code we are talking about.....The USA have kept it (Major League Soccer) and it hasn't damaged their game as they know they can't try and replace their local code of "Football" (Gridiron) just the same as we can't replace AFL. As much as I hate to say it, I don't think Soccer will ever overtake Footy as Australia's mainstream sport...so we should stop having this identity crisis and let it be known as Soccer or Football whichever you wantegg and chips wrote:Why is it that so few teams in the SAASL have as part of their name the title "FOOTBALL CLUB" in lieu of that horrible title "SOCCER CLUB"? Your right Porky, as long as there is AFL (football) played in this country, soccer will always be the bridesmaid.

I'd like to add that I think AFL is an absolute rubbish gameonthemound wrote:Your right Porky, as long as there is AFL (football) played in this country, soccer will always be the bridesmaid.

Haha, personally I think that AFL is the best game in the world but that's not what this topic is about.
Long live football, long live soccer and long live the SAASL...

Well done to you and your club Laney, at least one club is showing the way it should be.
When you have people playing the game and running the clubs and even they are defeatist then what hope does the game have?

go to NSW or Q'land and ask them about football and see if they talk about aussie rules. That's why it's bullshit about aussie rules being football in this country. The majority of the country doesn't think aussie rules = football.
Football was invented first, it uses the feet more, it's played by more people. It's pretty obvious which one is more deserving of the name.

Re: FOOTBALL CLUB V SOCCER CLUB
Qld and NSW both have AFL teams, but your right, they are predominantly Rugby states. If you add up all the members from the AFL clubs and compared them to the rugby teams I think you will find that AFL has just a few more numbers. So stating that fact I think the majority of people in this country follow the AFL. I'm not trying to bag soccer, in fact I've just come from Hindmarsh where I joined 5,000 fellow Adelaide United supporters watch Adelaide win. I must say, I'm not sure how healthy the round ball game is in this state when we can only attract 5,000 people to an ACL match. Port and the crows get more people to a trial match.
You say that soccer is more deserving of the name Football than AFL. If this is the case then why do we call it soccer?

just because something is more deserving, doesn't mean it's going to happen.
and my point was that the majority of people in this country do not refer to afl as football.
Us football fans should lead the way by calling all our teams football clubs, how can it catch on when you have teams named using the other word. If teams are really concerned about confusion then why "association football club"?
Re: FOOTBALL CLUB V SOCCER CLUB
that's the problem....too many codes use the term "football"..... let them...you use it if you want but don't bag clubs for keeping the term "soccer" in their name as at least you know for sure what sort of football they playJonny Lidon wrote:onthemound wrote:Your right Porky, as long as there is AFL (football) played in this country, soccer will always be the bridesmaid.

when did i "bag" them?
Re: FOOTBALL CLUB V SOCCER CLUB
What's so horrible about "soccer club"? It's part of a long Australian tradition.. with so many "football clubs" around already, it gets pretty confusing. Let's keep the word soccer- it gives us that touch of distinction.egg and chips wrote:Why is it that so few teams in the SAASL have as part of their name the title "FOOTBALL CLUB" in lieu of that horrible title "SOCCER CLUB"? This topic has been done to death on these forums, but..... soccer and aussie rules both emerged around the same time. Both are "football", but it helps to have other names to avoid confusion.Jonny Lidon wrote:onthemound wrote:Your right Porky, as long as there is AFL (football) played in this country, soccer will always be the bridesmaid.

Even though "soccer" was coined by an English soccer captain?winzor wrote:What's so horrible about "soccer club"? "Soccer" was always used in Australia as a tribute to the British link. The game here was even called "British Football" at one stage.Bacon888 wrote:Even though "soccer" was coined by an English soccer captain?winzor wrote:What's so horrible about "soccer club"? Re: FOOTBALL CLUB V SOCCER CLUB
Who gives a flying toss. theres a range of reasons why teams cant just change their name. We are Brahma Lodge soccer Club. Brahma Lodge Football Club plays down the road on an oval pitch. We've registered a web address containing soccer. Our logo has soccer. Our kits have soccer. etc etc. We're not confused, teams seem to rock up to play us each week. Its no big deal, you'd have to be pretty fkn thick to not realise our 'Soccer' club actually plays football

All of those are easily rectified.
We all know what the real football is, but it will never spread while the people involved in the game don't make the first move.

The GAME isn't called AFL, just like our game isn't called Premier League (or Amateur League)
