Why is it that so few teams in the SAASL have as part of their name the title "FOOTBALL CLUB" in lieu of that horrible title "SOCCER CLUB"? In a fantasy happy world football in Australia would be known as football....but I'm sorry to say it just hasn't panned out that way here....I don't think we really needed to change all the clubs to "football club" instead of "Soccer Club" to improve the games image here....I think all it has done has created confusion. We all have to use the term soccer when someone doesn't know which code we are talking about.....The USA have kept it (Major League Soccer) and it hasn't damaged their game as they know they can't try and replace their local code of "Football" (Gridiron) just the same as we can't replace AFL. As much as I hate to say it, I don't think Soccer will ever overtake Footy as Australia's mainstream sport...so we should stop having this identity crisis and let it be known as Soccer or Football whichever you want

go to NSW or Q'land and ask them about football and see if they talk about aussie rules. That's why it's bullshit about aussie rules being football in this country. The majority of the country doesn't think aussie rules = football.

Qld and NSW both have AFL teams, but your right, they are predominantly Rugby states. If you add up all the members from the AFL clubs and compared them to the rugby teams I think you will find that AFL has just a few more numbers. So stating that fact I think the majority of people in this country follow the AFL. I'm not trying to bag soccer, in fact I've just come from Hindmarsh where I joined 5,000 fellow Adelaide United supporters watch Adelaide win. I must say, I'm not sure how healthy the round ball game is in this state when we can only attract 5,000 people to an ACL match. Port and the crows get more people to a trial match.

"Soccer" was always used in Australia as a tribute to the British link. The game here was even called "British Football" at one stage.

Who gives a flying toss. theres a range of reasons why teams cant just change their name. We are Brahma Lodge soccer Club. Brahma Lodge Football Club plays down the road on an oval pitch. We've registered a web address containing soccer. Our logo has soccer. Our kits have soccer. etc etc. We're not confused, teams seem to rock up to play us each week. Its no big deal, you'd have to be pretty fkn thick to not realise our 'Soccer' club actually plays football

The GAME isn't called AFL, just like our game isn't called Premier League (or Amateur League)
