I wasn't looking for an argument, and you're entitled to your wrong opinion  but Zola was indisputably one of the best players in the World for several years, despite playing for a shite team. Litmanen showed glimpses of quality but never produced anything consistently that would earn him a 'world class' tag. Kewell was much the same but managed to show quality for longer. Neither came vaguely close to Gianfranco though.

BTW very few 'world class' players at Anfield in the last 20 years, that's been their problem. Probably only Gerrard and possibly Owen and Torres. Compare that to the endless list through the 70s and 80s when I was a kid.
Fowler
John barnes (not sure when he left Liverpool)
Both world class players if I ask me bit harsh to say only Gerard Owen Torres
An I'm on my knees looking for the answers....

I did think of both of them but whilst Barnesy was definitely world class before the early nineties, he got injured and was never the same. Therefore he wasn't included in the last 20 years.

Same goes for God, in his first spell at Anfield he was undoubtedly world class but, when he went back later in his career, his best days were well behind him.

Can't think of any others?

I did note that Nicky Tanner resorted to personal insults as usual, but couldn't come up with more players to refute my statement.

Norvern (Adelaide) monkey

It's all opinions so it's obviously subjective, but would you have Alonso in a World XI from the last 20 years? Would he get in a World 2nd or 3rd XI? Not even close for me.

Mascherano is, I'm assuming, put there as a joke? To quote John McEnroe, "you cannot be serious".

Reina, I confess I forgot about, and would be close.

However, talking about a period of 20 years and we're struggling for real quality names. For the 20 years before that, there were dozens.

Alonso is one of the best in the world at present - in his role, and was with us.

He would get into most current world's best teams, but not a world's best of the last 20 years.

Its all subjective, but Liverpool have had many many great players, but never enough at one time.

Our 2001-2 team was good, but GH lost the plot and bought Diouf and Diao instead of strengthening, small errors make big differences long term.

On your basis Spurs have had zero world class players for probably the last 30 years.

Alonso is an indispensible player in one of the top 5 teams in the world, I would assume that would suit the requirement of being world class. He is also recognised as one of the best deep lying playmakers in the world today.

Mascherano was (is?) captain of one of the top 5 national teams and also a regular player in the best team seen in my generation, again would fit most peoples definition of world class.

This was a 5min off the top of my head type list, I would also say that ten years ago Hyppia and Carragher would have been classified as world class defenders.

FAAAAARKEN!!! Don't get me started on this.

Reina and Mascherano!!! Ur having a laugh  You can't be serious?

The 2 hottest properties in England atm and which ALL the top clubs want are Bale and Van Persie.

2 truly 'Potential' world class players.

My definition of a world class player is someone who can produce the goods season after season at the highest level AND at whatever club they play at. 'World Class' players very rarely have dips in form.

Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer spring to mind

There is a reason that Liverpool have won very little in the last 20 years and I was offering my opinion for why that should be, not slagging them off, not having a go, merely putting forward a point of view. I never said Spurs had had any world class players or not, it wasn't about them, but puerile little boys like you can't put forward a coherent argument, so you have to resort to the 'my dick's bigger than your dick' argument.

For starters, Alonso is not playing for Liverpool and IMO never looked as good at Anfield as he does when he's got Xavi and Iniesta alongside him. No great surprise there, but there was a reason the Fat Waiter let him go.

Mascherano, please, and Hyppia even more so.

Carra's been a loyal, model pro and a rock for Liverpool, but never world class like say, Hansen.

Only parts I'd argue with would be regarding Alonso and Hyypia. Alonso's last season at Liverpool was one of the best of his career. He was pure class. In my opinion, and it could just be the romantic in me, Hyypia could have gotten into any side at his best. Was a top, top centre half.

No you said we haven't had many world class players over the last 20 years and limited it to Torres, Owen and Gerrard.

Other than the last few years the previous decade has had liverpool amongst the elite clubs in Europe with winning it once, runner up once another semi-final appearance and 2 quarter final appearances. In short we were one of the top 8 teams in europe for 5 out of the 10 years. That sort of record alone would suggest that we have had a fair sprinkling of 'world class players'.

Just because Fowler had a second less successful stint doesn't mean he wasn't at one point a world class player by that same reasoning you could argue that because Torres has suffered a massive form slump he was never world class which just is not the case.

Fowler, Rush, Barnes, Gerrard, Alonso, Torres, Hyypia, Owen, Reina, Carragher, McManaman.

Players I feel will be considered world class:
Agger, Skrtel, Lucas, Suarez, Carroll, Kelly and Dirk Kuyt*.

*Any player who helps his nation to a world cup final in his non preferred position and is currently the 11th highest goal scorer and 8th most capped player has to be considered world class in my opinion especially when this player has managed this despite the glaring weaknesses in his game and his actions of the pitch mean that if he is not considered a world class player he is at least a class human being.

No offence to spurs fans but I don't consider Bale or VDV to be world class. Modric and King are.
