That they did. They were always going to win it "next year" in the 70's and 80's (apart from the season they were relegated). Now to this generation, it seems to be uncool to think in such a way.

Kenny Dalglish is paid to judge the Liverpool players. And he did so with condemnation at the weekend. But who will judge Dalglish?

Certainly the Match of the Day sofa is not the place to turn for an entirely frank critique of Liverpool’s recent problems, given friendships of old from Anfield. On MOTD, Dalglish is still King Kenny and when he says the players are to blame for a defeat of startling ineptitude away to Bolton Wanderers on Saturday, his word is taken as though from the Bible.

How, in the boardroom at Anfield this week, they must hope that they, too, can rally behind the icon, rather than have to face pressing, difficult questions about Midas losing his golden touch.

Fenway Sports Group (FSG) needs doubts over the Dalglish revival like the owner needs Manchester City and Chelsea to spend more billions. Or Andy Carroll to scuff another chance.

When they made him permanent manager last summer after a successful caretaker period, the Americans knew they were not picking a coach but reviving a legend. They were not announcing a guy in a tracksuit but someone with a grip over the fans as well as a decent portion of the media.

Tying themselves to such a figure can have the advantage of buying insurance from supporter criticism, something Dalglish can feel he has earned by his great achievements as a player and managerial success in his first spell at Anfield.

No one could dispute the genuine love of the Kop for Dalglish or vice versa, which has been at the heart of the process of renewal since the nadir of the bitter days under Tom Hicks and George Gillett Jr. But to have turned to such a hero can also bring its complications. The power of fan worship can be hard to control and FSG, having handed the reins to Dalglish, has reasons to wonder where he is leading the club.

The Luis Suárez case seemed to demonstrate just how far the manager’s reach extends at Anfield and the lack of checks from the hierarchy. It was a manager’s understandable instinct to want to defend his star striker, but where was the senior executive demanding a sensible limit? Where was the boss taking one look at those ridiculous T-shirts and telling Dalglish to take his off before he could make a fool of himself on television?

There was a way of defending Suárez while not entirely compromising the reputation of Liverpool, but Dalglish drove the club on their self-defeating policy of all-out attack, which resulted in the Uruguay striker receiving a harsher ban — eight games — than he might otherwise have done.

Did the club, from Ian Ayre, the managing director, to Tom Werner, the chairman, really think this was the wise approach and, if so, surely hindsight tells them something else?

The case stirred fresh questions about exactly how Liverpool are being run by the Americans. In the model they envisaged, FSG would appoint a younger coach working with Damien Comolli, the director of football. Instead, they appointed Dalglish, a man in his 60s, who was never their first choice but returned to fan acclaim.

There have been other compromises and contradictions. They talked of sabermetrics and their love of the Moneyball philosophy of prudent development of players and then went out and spent eye-watering sums.

They are not the first, or last, owners to have found that football requires you to think on the hoof, but, given the urgent need for a new stadium, the lack of Champions League funds and faltering form, which suggest that the exile from the top four is very likely to extend to another season, the need to continue the revival under Dalglish rather than lurch in a fresh direction is pressing.

Much as they celebrate Uefa’s Financial Fair Play regulations, the Liverpool board cannot wait for the rules to constrain the nouveau riches so that this storied institution can simply rise back on top.

It is why hard questions need to be asked about the inability of Carroll to put the ball in the net after costing £35 million and the failure of Stewart Downing and Jordan Henderson to make an impact consistent with their sizeable fees.

Also on the agenda should be the sale of Raul Meireles to Chelsea, given that the Portugal midfielder could surely have performed the role that Henderson is taking time to grasp.

There is an air of edginess as the Dalglish regime enters a critical, perhaps even defining, period with two important cup games against the Manchester clubs this week.

The tension was heightened on Saturday when the manager dropped the pretence that his new signings were working out well and effectively accused his team of betraying the great Liverpool traditions.

It was quite an outburst and one with which Dalglish surely acknowledged that, in these days when a substitution from Arsène Wenger can bring howls of derision, even the King is not immune from searching criticism.

Nor should he be, even if to debate the stature of a legend will bring soul-searching and potential conflicts that would make the old rows over the merits of Rafael Benítez around Anfield seem like a jolly old laugh.

No wonder it feels this week as if so much more than a trip to Wembley is at stake.

Suarez was harshly teated, this hasnt helped us in recent weeks, AC is struggling hence why we are drawing so many. UTD have as big as failure at the other end of the pitch...a keeper who is not up to the hype. It doesn't matter who the manager is, hefty sums wasted are common. Torres at Chelsea is another.

We are not doing as well as we would like, but that's life.

Kenny has had a good 13 months, with a few dips, all managers/teams suffer these.

I hate using this card as its not many on here's fault that they can't get to Wembley, but if we get to Wembley in the Carling Cup it would be immense, Cup Finals and winning comps is what football is all about. 2nd, 3rd,4th and CL qualification is all second rate compared to actually winning something.

So knock Kenny all you like, we are better than we were last year, Man Utd aren't.......

Please don't try and compare Andy Carroll to De Gea. The keeper will be just fine. His season has been okay apart from a dodgy start. Clutching at straws again there I think. The other lad Lindergaard deserves a run in the team now. De Gea will be the Spanish first choice keeper for years unlike Reina!

And I actually think we are better than last year, we've just had terrible luck with injuries. We've got more points than at this stage last season but we lie 2nd in the table due to the emergence of Man City.
