Sydney breeze past Adelaide
Adelaide United's losing streak extended to 17 matches after they were defeated 4-1 by Sydney FC in an exciting Westfield W-League encounter on Saturday.
The losers put in a spirited display and claimed an early lead through Marijana Rajcic's spectacular chip.
But Sydney FC soon mounted a response and they were helped by three individual errors from Adelaide goalkeeper Sian McLaren that led to goals.
The Hindmarsh Stadium encounter presented Adelaide with a chance to win their first match in 33, with their last triumph coming against Sydney FC in November 2008, but David Edmondson's side started slowly.
Sydney were well on top and they hit the post from a corner in the early stages, while Servet Uzunlar, Kylie Ledbrook, Leena Khamis, Renee Rollason and Heather Garriock all had opportunities to score.
The visitors were stunned on 30 minutes though, as Rajcic chipped Allison Lipsher from distance.
The striker capitalised on a long ball over the top of the defence and had Lipsher scrambling with her effort, which bounced in off the side of the post.
Rajcic nearly scored a second shortly after and Grace Henry also went close, but it was not long before Sydney drew level.
Sarah Walsh set up the equaliser, finishing a nice run with a smart pass to Garriock who produced a terrific curling finish on her non-preferred right foot.
The visitors took the lead before half-time when McLaren inexplicably let Uzunlar's cross from wide on the right slip through her hands and cross the line.
Adelaide enjoyed a strong spell of pressure in the early stages of the second half and when called on, McLaren made a couple of smart saves.
Sydney did have a chance to put themselves two goals clear after 67 minutes when Emma Checker brought down Caitlin Foord in the penalty area, but Ledbrook's spot-kick rolled into the post and was cleared away to safety.
While the opportunity was missed, Sydney quickly had the ball in the back of the net when McLaren made a mess of a corner from the left.
The shot-stopper saw her attempted punch spin behind her and crawl over the line and with just 13 minutes to play, McLaren again saw a shot slip through her hands as Foord celebrated her first of the afternoon.
The hosts did have claims for a penalty in the dying stages and they had every right to feel aggrieved at the final scoreline, given the manner of their performance.
Adelaide United 1 (Mariana Rajcic 30)
Sydney FC 4 (Heather Garriock 38, Servet Uzunlar 42, Leena Khamis 76, Caitlin Foord 78)

'the losers' is a how a child would refer to a losing team, not a journalist.

Re: Sydney breeze past Adelaide
The title of the article is so, so wrong. They in no way 'breezed' past us

I don't know who writes these things, but FFA should be more impartial. They represent all of the teams, not just the ones in Sydney. Obviously whoever wrote this ddn't really watch he game, or else knows nothing about football. Mistakes were made, opportunities missed. But Adelaide did score first and pressured late. It was hardly a 'breeze'. Shame FFA.
Re: Sydney breeze past Adelaide
Yes, but being from South Australia we should be used to being the dark horse against the eastern states.
At the national level, in most sports, referees favour or give the benefit of the doubt to the eastern states every time. I guess all we can do is know what really happened and ignore articles such as this.

There will be no team from SA next season
W-League will lose westfield sponsorhip and fold. Or it will become a round robin weekend carnival format.
Poor comp all round

Yep. Referees fault SA haven't won in 3 years. The fact that some of these comments are so positive about the garbage shown on Saturday and blaming the referee for the loss just shows how far the attitude is off.

Isn't it interesting how there can be so many varied opinions when everyone is watching the same game!
I wonder if the kick it long, lose it is part of the new coaches game plan and will filiter down to the junior grades as opposed to the FFSA previous direction of retaining possession and working it up the pitch?

I'm sorry when did I say that it's the referee's fault that we haven't won in three years???Randoman wrote:Yep. Referees fault SA haven't won in 3 years. I stated my opinion based on prior experience. Don't take this out of context just so you can have an argument.

You are using the refereeing bias as an excusing factor in AU's terrible results. It is not.

Is it still Barnet's fault? The girls suck regardless of whose coaching.

They are most certainly better under Dave than with Barnett from what I have seen.El Capitano wrote:![]()

Dave has structured and organised the team. Lets nor forget the quality of the opponents the Lady Reds have to play every week. I think they are much more competitive this season

If they stop conceding soft goals the final score might look a bit different.
Re: Sydney breeze past Adelaide
Yes overheard a AU player saying the game plan was indeed to get long balls out wide and use the wingers speed to exploit their defence....BEN9 wrote:Yep. Referees fault SA haven't won in 3 years. May work at Junior level, doesn't seem to be working for the Lady Reds IMO...
And what's the deal with Ness being dropped, is she injured?? She has only played about 20 minutes of the season. I would rather see her have a run than MJ, at least Ness has the speed to get in behind the defence.
Re: Sydney breeze past Adelaide
ness looked very sharp in the moments she has played this year. would love to see her have a start or play a bigger role in the next few weeks.
