FA charges Suarez over Evra complaint

Post by Le King »

Liverpool forward Luis Suarez has been charged by the FA in relation to the accusations of racism from Manchester United defender Patrice Evra on October 15.

Evra made the allegation in an interview with French television channel Canal+ following the 1-1 draw between the two sides at Old Trafford. He said: "There are cameras, and you can see him [Suarez] say a certain word to me at least ten times. No place for that in 2011. The referee is aware of what was said."

The United defender reported the incident to referee Andre Marriner after the final whistle and maintained that he wanted to pursue the complaint, while a Liverpool spokesman said that Suarez "categorically denied'' the allegation.

However, after saying they would investigate the allegations, an FA statement read on Wednesday: ''The FA has today charged Liverpool's Luis Suarez following an incident that occurred during the Liverpool versus Manchester United fixture at Anfield on 15 October 2011. It is alleged that Suarez used abusive and/or insulting words and/or behaviour towards Manchester United's Patrice Evra contrary to FA rules.

''It is further alleged that this included a reference to the ethnic origin and/or colour and/or race of Patrice Evra. The FA will issue no further comment at this time.''

Liverpool have maintained their support of the player and issued a statement on their official website.

It read: ''The Club this afternoon received notification from the Football Association of their decision to charge Luis Suarez and will take time to properly review the documentation which has been sent to us.

''We will discuss the matter fully with him when he returns from international duty, but he will plead not guilty to the charge and we expect him to request a personal hearing. Luis remains determined to clear his name of the allegation made against him by Patrice Evra. The Club remain fully supportive of Luis in this matter.''

Re: FA charges Suarez over Evra complaint

Post by The Kop »

If this was Luis Suarez, littleknown South American journeyman of Wigan FC would Evra and Mr Ferguson taken it this far given the context......
Patrice Evra is aware that the nuances of South American slang may prevent him from demonstrating that he was the victim of racist abuse from Liverpool's Luis Suarez in Manchester United's league match at Anfield last month.

Sources in France suggested last night that the word Evra says he heard Suarez utter several times in the second half of the game may be negrito, a South American term which is generally affectionate, but sometimes – as in this context – a way of poking fun.

It translates as "little black fella" though is such a common part of the Spanish vernacular that team-mates use it on each other. A tweet that was sent on Friday from Dani Pachecho to his Spain U21 team-mate Thiago translated as: "Negrito. Enjoy yourself there and if you need anything the lion will come to the rescue haha..."

If negrito was the word Suarez used, then Evra's shock is understandable if he did not understand the context in which that particular piece of vernacular is used.

But in Uruguay and Argentina, the use of the word negro and negrito by commentators describing Premier League players is common. Visitors to South America often find that shocking if they are unaware of the nuance but the Spanish word negro for the colour black is pronounced differently to the offensive "negro" and one has nothing to do with the other. Un hombre negro means "black man". Affixing 'ito' and 'ita' on the end of words is to express that something is smaller.

The possibility of negrito being the offending expression explains why Suarez said in midweek that his own words were not an insult but just his own "way of expressing myself. I called him something his team-mates at Manchester call him, and even they were surprised by his reaction".Suarez said "there were two parts of the discussion, one in Spanish, one in English", and it is is possible that David de Gea and Javier Hernandez – the members of United's Spanish-speaking fraternity on the pitch that day – may have evidence relevant to Suarez's claims.

The expression is certainly a very long way from Luis Aragones referring to Henry as negro de mierda back in 2004. Though Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish has been deeply critical of the time it has taken the Football Association to conclude this investigation, the complexities do reveal what the authorities are up against. Dalglish's complaints were premature and unjustified.

Meanwhile, Suarez has revealed his desire to remain at Liverpool for many years to come. He has made an excellent start to life on Merseyside and admits he feels completely at home in England and believes it would be difficult to re-create his level of satisfaction anywhere else in the world.

Suarez said: "I've just started a phase of my career which I always dreamed about and wanted to do, which is to play for Liverpool. I have five years left on my contract and I think beyond that, I'm already thinking about staying many more years at Liverpool.

"It's a club I like. I feel very good about being here, about being in the city. I feel very pleased. It would be difficult to match the atmosphere, hunger for success and glory that this club has, at another team."

Suarez also spoke about netting four times in a World Cup qualifier against Chile last Friday night. The striker joked that his Uruguayan team-mates had joked that he could even have doubled his tally had he not been substituted after 76 minutes as a precautionary measure.

Suarez, who scored all four in a 4-0 win, said: "You always dream about scoring goals and scoring four in a game is not easy, but if it wasn't for the efforts of my team mates, I would not have scored the goals.

"The important thing is that I could keep playing, but I did not over-extend myself in some plays. One of my team-mates joked that if it wasn't for the slight back pain I could've scored eight!"

He added: "I love playing, so whenever I'm taken off I mourn a little, and get a sick feeling in my stomach, but it's all about the team, and I always appreciate everyone's efforts"

LOL, re-read that again. i'm not to sure.

For god's sake his Suarez's mother is black. ie he's half black........this whole situation is ridiculous and Evra could have cleared it up quickly with his Spanish speaking teammates before going beyond the point of no return by blabbering on French TV.

I suggest you carefully re-read the FA quote:
''The FA has today charged Liverpool's Luis Suarez following an incident that occurred during the Liverpool versus Manchester United fixture at Anfield on 15 October 2011. It is alleged that Suarez used abusive and/or insulting words and/or behaviour towards Manchester United's Patrice Evra contrary to FA rules.
Notice the lack of word racism.
As it’s the letter of the law and Evra/Mr Alex went beyond the point of common sense, Suarez will be found guilty of the offence he’s charged with and the FA can’t be seen to be sitting on their hands. The penalty will probably be a fine or good behaviour bond…

If it all starts getting this petty the penalty will be game as whole not just Suarez & Liverpool.

thanx, i did rte-read it.
my point being, if their wasnt any real evidence, the FA would charge him!
so, either their is MORE To the story than we both know or Evra is being a little girl.

personally, I think if its the latter, then Evra should be penalised for bringing the game into disrepute.

also, I dont think Suarez is so innocent as u paint him out to be.
Evra would of copped alot of "friendly abuse" in his career, so for him to actually proceed with these claims, means he must of been racially abused.

neways, i will pass judgement once the TRUTH comes out, until then - its all hearsay, IMO!

Should have been clarified behind closed doors before being put out in the open. Yes I'm an LFC fan, and I have a strong dislike for Evra, but noone should be racially vilified on the pitch (I'm sure it wont prove to be true, as Kop mentioned, Suarez's mother is black). I feel the whole situation has been blown up when two clubs the stature and class of LFC and MUFC should have been able to sort it out without the issue being trawled through newspapers.

hence, my point!!!!
I believe their is more to the story than we all think we know!

It ends when players shut their mouths and do what they're paid to do.

So it will be acceptable for assault charges to be laid for bad tackles then?

As Chelsea4thewin will know - if he knows his club's history, charges can be laid even for tackles that aren't bad.......

The FA have probably quite cleverly put themselves in a 'no lose' situation by charging Suarez.

If the available evidence turns out to be so inconsequential that Suarez is exonerated, it will be Evra who will be vilified, not the FA who, after all, are acting upon his complaint and therefore largely, the evidence he or his club has submitted.

On the other hand, if Suarez IS found guilty and suffers a lengthy ban, the FA will be able to claim further kudos in their anti-racism crusade.

However, Liverpool have unequivocally stood behind Suarez from day one so they are either pretty confident of the outcome or extraordinarily naive.

And of course, the hearing will allow Suarez and his representatives to defend himself, presumably outlining the cultural/language interpretation variances in Uruguay and the UK.

If this is so, it is going to be difficult for the FA to dismiss this argument. To do so, they would effectively declare that about 400million Spaniards and Spanish-speaking South Americans are habitually racist according to UK standards.

That would make Alf Ramsey's 'animals' description of the 1966 Argentine side sound like a term of endearment by comparison.

That's bulldust though. You can unwittingly say something offensive without being a racist especially when in a foreign country, you just have to be careful. The problem is, we don't know what Evra thinks he heard. If Suarez said something that Evra found racially offensive but that is simply vernacular that got 'lost in translation', Suarez should get a suspended fine, say sorry and not do it again. End of the matter.

This all makes me wonder if Suarez knew what he was saying was offensive to Evra but also knew he could defend himself afterwards by claiming it isn't a racist word in South America! Either way, it's probably still gonna be hard to prove.

Of course it's the same, where does it say in the rules handball on the line is worse than bringing the last man down.....

What track record did he have at the time?

Since being in England what has he done that is wrong? So far he has been accused of something, but I don't think he has been found guilty of anything except making defenders look foolish.....you would have him in your team(s) like a flash if given half a chance.

I would quit this one if I was you...you are losing big time....not often I can use big in describing you
